Love (Ást) is a musical written by Gísli Örn Garðarsson and Víkingur Kristjánsson, and directed by Garðarsson. The production premiered at Reykjavík City Theatre (Borgarleikhúsið) in 2007, in a collaboration between Vesturport and Leikfélag Reykjavíkur. Set in a retirement home, the story follows two elderly residents who rediscover love late in life.

With warmth, humour, and quiet melancholy, the piece explores memory, longing, and the enduring human need for connection—reminding us that love does not fade with age, but evolves.

True to Garðarsson’s theatrical language, the production blends music, movement, and visual storytelling, creating a poetic and emotionally resonant stage experience. The ensemble-driven staging, combined with a rich musical score, allows the narrative to unfold with both intimacy and theatricality. Following its success in Iceland, the production toured internationally. It was performed at the Lyric Hammersmith in London and later staged in South Korea, introducing new audiences to Vesturport’s distinctive approach to storytelling.
