Jesus Christ
Superstar

In 2007, City Theatre Reykjavik staged a bold and electrifying reimagining of Jesus Christ Superstar, transforming the classic rock opera into a raw, hard rock spectacle.

Driven by thunderous guitars and an unrelenting edge, the production featured two of the most distinctive voices of their generation: Krummi Björgvinsson, frontman of Minus, and Jenni Ólafsson of Brain Police. Together, they led a star-studded cast that brought intensity, vulnerability, and explosive power to the stage.

At the heart of the production stood a towering cross, both a striking visual centerpiece and a powerful symbol. It loomed over the performers, reflecting the weight of faith, sacrifice, and spectacle, while grounding the high-octane performance in the story’s enduring themes.

Blending the visceral energy of hard rock with the emotional depth of the original score, this version of Jesus Christ Superstar was not just a revival, it was a reinvention. Loud, uncompromising, and deeply human.
